The Everest Power Rankings 2022 Edition 2 - Post Concorde Stakes

Welcome to the Everest Power Rankings, Edition 2 post Concorde Stakes. Not much has changed in the past month however, the picture has became somewhat clearer as to who may run.

10. In The Congo ($26 on TAB){Drifting}

Previous Ranking: 10th (-1)

Dropping one spot to kick us off is In The Congo. He is one of the 3 horses on this list to have had a run so far and I would say the run hurt his stock, however only slightly. His 6th in the McEwen was poor but luckless. Sitting 3 wide in the McEwen on a hot tempo was going to be a recipe of the disaster but with others either holding or going better, he had to slip.

Last Start: 6th in the 2022 G2 McEwen Stakes

9. Overpass ($26 on TAB){Shortened}

Previous Ranking: 9th (+1)

Normally, I do not place a high weight on trials, particularly for horses that lead but Overpass has been going about as well as you can in them. He has ability but we have to wait and see how he will perform in a race.

Last Start: 7th in the 2022 G1 All-Aged Stakes

8. Paulele ($15 on TAB){Held}

Previous Ranking: 8th (+0)

Not much to add for Paulele here. Likely gets the Godolphin slot unless they go bold with an In Secret but if Bivouac could not get an Everest Slot, I find it very unlikely that she will. Paulele is a sound selection and can run well however, I believe the there is a gap between 7 and 8.

Last Start: 2nd in the 2022 G1 Kingsford Smith Cup

7. Lost and Running [Slot]($11 on TAB){Held}

Previous Ranking: 6th (-1)

He has not really done anything wrong since his poor run in the Newmarket which we can forgive, just that another has done far more right. He has a versatile running style where a fast tempo should suit him.

Last Start: 14th in the 2022 G1 Newmarket Hcp

6. Snapdancer [Slot??]($15 on TAB){Shortened}

Previous Ranking: Unranked

She keeps getting better and better doesn't she? Her Sangster run was awesome and her Memsie win was sublime but she did tire suggesting 1200m will be perfect. Rumour has it a slot is all but final and I think she is a very fair selection. Reminds me a lot of Haut Brion Her as a 1200m horse who goes forward and can sustain a hot tempo.

Last Start: 1st in the 2022 G1 Memsie Stakes

5. Mazu [Slot]($8 on TAB){Held}

Previous Ranking: 4th (-1)

The reason for the one ranking drop when both fourth and fifth have not done anything is that both In The Congo and Zapateo both struggled against the best horses and that was the form around Mazu so he has to drop based off that.

Last Start: 1st in the 2022 G1 Doomben Cup

4. Masked Crusader [Slot]($15 on TAB){Held}

Previous Ranking 5th (+1)

I've actually came around to his Newmarket Hcp Run where he was 7th with a high weight at his first go on the straight on the wrong side of the track. Was supposed to return on the wet but the track put a stop to that.

Last Start: 9th in the 2022 G1 TJ Smith Stakes

3. Classique Legend ($11 on TAB){Held}

Previous Ranking: 2nd (-1)

The enigma as I am calling him. The best horse in this field at his peak, just no clue if he will reach that again. His first trial was solid behind Nature Strip and Overpass and I can most definitely see improvement but just how much. Will need a fair bit to win but I believe he can do it. Les Bridges comments seem to be mimicking those of 2020 as opposed to 2021 where it was a battle to get him ready, because of this, I have faith in him but still need to see more.

Last Start: 5th in the 2021 The Everest

2. Eduardo [Slot]($8 on TAB){Shortened}

Previous Ranking: 3rd (+1)

Track did work in his favour but rail biased track or not, he was cantering in that. If the Everest is heavy, he will be my top seed in the race and if he draws inside Nature Strip in the Shorts, he will have every chance to beat him.

Last Start: 1st in the 2022 G3 Concorde Stakes

1. Nature Strip [Slot](2.80 on TAB){Held} Previous Ranking: 1st (+0)

Not much more to add. Trialled well and looks ready to go first up and will get a four week break into the Everest. Still the one they have to beat, even at 8.

Last Start: 1st in the 2022 G1 Kings Stand Stakes

At this stage, I see the top 10 like this. 10-8 are a similar level with 4-7 being a similar level. Classique Legend is the enigma and Nature Strip and Eduardo are the top two. Snapdancer enters the top 10, Entriviere leaves due to retirement. Rothfire would make the Top 10 (somewhere in that 4-7 range), as would Imperatriz, Levante and the Inferno (or at least around the mark) but it seems as if they will all head to other races. Best of Bordeaux still one to watch as he would be Coolmore's pick at this stage. Could Shades of Rose be in Everest contention?
