Weekend Preview - 13/08/2022

Updated: Aug 27, 2022

Welcome to the second preview of the season for racing on the 13th of August 2022, G2 PB Lawrence Stakes Day. The feeling of spring is certainly in the air and lets get the season started in the right way after a middling week last week.

Race 1 - Open 1600m Hcp

Chief Altony comes into this race as favourite and while he appears to be short, it seems to be deserved as most of the form around him has ended up being very handy, with Lyrical Lad winning last week. He might prefer it heavy but he is not inept on the dry. So Si Bon however, meets him 4kgs better and with a strong run last start and at the track where 4 of his 8 wins have came from, he deserves to be respected. Jimmy The Bear keeps running well but jumps from 3yo class to open class. I do not like how Thought of That was being trained over the sticks and is now being sent here, that is enough to put a pen through. Midnight Blue has been jumping out well. Tralee Rose & Vow and Declare likely hit their peaks later in their preps but Tralee Rose may be able to run a placing fresh.

Betting Strategy: So Si Bon 0.25 Units Win (would have gone place but the scratching has made it so there are only 7 horses)

Race 2 - BM78 F&M 1600m Hcp

Americain Angel has been running well this prep, hitting the line well first up here and striking some bad luck second and third up. Draws wider here which suits her running style so hopefully, she finds a spot midfield and hits the line well. Thalassophile (Dual Acceptance) and Rusutsu were both 2nd and 3rd respectively last start in that same race and deserve to be repected here. Spanish Tides won that race but meets those horses 2.5-3kgs worse off, enough to make me look elsewhere. Pitchanun ran well last start 2nd up but is jumping up in class here. Unusual Culture likely leads with Meech on board.

Betting Strategy: Americain Angel 0.5 Units

Race 3 - BM90 4yo+ Mares 1100m Hcp

She's All Class comes into this off a very strong first up run, going down to a group horse in waiting. She meets a similar standard here, minus the winner and carrying only 56kgs, will need a good thing to beat her or bad luck. Scorched Earth was poor first up but was solid last prep. Hellfest, flopped against better horses in her last run but has since trialled reasonably well.

Betting Strategy: She's All Class 2 Units

Race 4 - BM78 1200m Hcp

Lady of Honour comes into this as the top tip with 3 on the trot last prep, looking to build a picket fence here and only lost came to the handy Scorched Earth. Invincible Jet will try and cross them to lead. If I Am Bene takes a midfield position or maybe even more forward, she will be right in this. Home Rule deserves respect.

Betting Strategy: Lady of Honour 1 unit win

Race 5 - G3 3yoC&G 1100m SW+P

The first black type race on the card and you can smell the spring in the air. Typically, this race is an awesome launching pad for the winner. Semillion comes into this as the winner of the Kindergarten and is my top seed but I am not sure how to best rate him. Has trialled fairly. Cannonball seems a silly price to me at 18s and was not far behind Serjarden at his second start. Alpha One and Giga Kick both have put together some impressive wins but this will be their biggest tests to date.

Betting Strategy: No bet but an intense watch

Race 6 - G3 3yoF 1100m SW+P

Now for the fillies and it is just as open. Miss Roseiano my top seed here as she was very close to Revolutionary Miss but did not fire in a Blue Diamond. Lady Laguna was 3rd behind Fireburn/She's Extreme before the slipper which looks the right form in hindsight, since trialled well. She's Got The Boom brings 3/3 down to Victoria in her biggest test yer. Unraced Lomandra has trialled very well, just in behind Lady Laguna at latest. Others like Ebhaar, Imlovingya, Ojai and Typhoon Titmus all deserve to be considered. Realistically, the whole field does.

Betting Strategy: No bet but another watch and see.

Race 7 - LR Open 4yo+ 1200m Hcp

I had not heard of this horse before this week but Uncommon James is a deserving favourite but meets his biggest test here. Open Minded most likely to knock him off IMO. Ranges also brings in Queensland form against better opposition but not as impressive. Does Sartorial Splendor bob up? I did like Lombardo but after Mick Price's comments, it is hard to get excited. Sinawann ran well 1st up over this trip before but feel he will be better suited next start:

Betting Strategy: No bet

Race 8 - G2 Open 1400m WFA

Mr Brightside comes into this as favourite and off a 4th in the ASM and a win in the Doncaster Mile, it is easy to see why. The old boy Streets of Avalon comes into this off a poor first up run but typically, he is a horse that performs at his best later in a prep and is second up too soon. He draws barrier 1 so will not have to cross anyone to settle off Buffalo River, who probably prefers it wet. I Am Superman has trialled well but probably a handicap or G3 horse nowadays. Elephant likes this trip a lot and is a very solid galloper and Scallopini was solid first up but this is probably his upper distance limit. Aysar was not disgraced in his first two runs of this prep. Regal Power likely is here to get miles into the legs and cannot see Uncle Bryn firing.

Betting Strategy: Streets of Avalon 0.25 units win, 0.75 units place.

and: 2, 3, 7 & 8 Boxed Tri 0.5 units (41.66% at $10)

Race 9 - BM84 1400m Hcp

To finish the day at Caulfield, we have a tough race. Military Expert on top as he has typically been racing better horses. Unanimous my next tip where we put a pen through his first up run. Pascero probably my next choice and I could even see Think N Fly bobbing up. El Rocko has ran well at past 2 but a big jump in class here.

Betting Strategy: No bet in the get out.

Race 1 - Highway Class 3 1300m Hcp

Again, Highways are not my strong suit but I will stick to the strategy of lightly raced or having already raced in the city. Russley Crown fits the bill of a lightly raced horse that has been running well. Dubbo Wanderer has to be considered for similar reasons. Kings Trust has been running well enough in the city and will prefer this surface to the heavy. Daksha has also had some promising runs in the city.

Betting Strategy: No bet

Race 2 - BM78 3yo 1300m Hcp

Plenty of lightly raced types that show promise, every chance a few horses here go to do better things. Backrow is my top seed here, performing reasonably well behind Osipenko and has since trialled well. True Crime is 2/3 but seems to do his best on heavy. Waverider Buoy was not far off Troach who goes around in a better race today. Showcoat should not be forgotten, as he ran well in a Todman. So many more could bob up.

Betting Strategy: No bet but watch closely

Race 3 - Midway BM72 1400m Hcp

Nictock has drawn a good barrier to go forward but she will get stiff competition from Oakfield Arrow. Bullet Wing looks to be a reasonable type, having won 2/4. Oxford Tycoon has a 3kg claim and his a weaker race here.

Betting Strategy: No Bet

Race 4 - BM88 1200m Hcp

A wet tracker vs a dry tracker here up the top of the market. I will be siding with the wet tracker in Conscript who has been running very well lately with a nice win at Benchmark 78 level last start so this is a standard jump. Katalin deserves respect but I think she is slightly better over 1300-1400 metres but is soft 6 even too wet for her? Needs to dry. Dream Circle is a consistent galloper who has been running well at this class but this seems to be his level. Munitions is an ex Godolphin who should also command some attention.

Betting Strategy: No bet

Race 5 - BM78 F&M 1400m Hcp

Frumos comes into this as favourite and it does not take a genius to figure out why as she brained them in the same class last start. Tawfiq Lass and Riduna probably the next best but both are coming from BM72 and yet to establish them self at this level. Lunakorn has been racing up in grade and might be a decent place bet.

Betting Strategy: 1 unit win Frumos

Race 6 - Open 1400m Hcp

Coming into race 6 we have in my opinion the most intriguing race on the card and that is because of Mugatoo. Easily the class of the field who always performs better fresh however, he has not raced in 15 months or so, and is carrying 62kgs with the claim. He has trialled well recently but find it hard to back him here. Surefire seems to be a 2000-2400m horse that could put in a run here fresh. Oscar Zulu has some form behind Taksu and was 4L off them in a group race in Brisbane. Titanium Power has been running well but hits a jump in class here.

Betting Strategy: No bet due to uncertainty around Mugatoo.

Race 7 - BM78 1800m Hcp

An uninspiring race to kick off the quaddie here so I will keep it short, Lovely Esteem the one to beat but Alcyone form does not seem as good now. Monfelicity seems a decent price for how she has been running. Elusive Jewel my next best followed by Kirkeby.

Betting Strategy: No bet

Race 8 - LR 3yo 1100m Hcp

Another tough race to assess but landed on Sebonack as my top tip. Awesome debut, good in the Blue Diamond and likely did not handle the Sydney wet. Spacewalk another who was strong in the Kindergarten but was quite far off Best Of Bordeaux. Kibou likely leads and has trialled well, they will have to run him down. Troach, Sweet Ride, maybe even a Voldemort could figure.

Betting Strategy: I like Sebonack but could see Kibou being hard to run down so no bet.

Race 9 - BM78 C,G&E 1400m Hcp

Another race not overly inspiring for me at least. Canasta probably top tip, with Marnix just in behind. Kalino and Two Big Fari probably just in behind them. Personally see this as very open.

Betting Strategy: No bet

Race 10 - BM78 1100m Hcp

And another moderate race to finish the day with a clear favourite and deservedly so but is very short and I think Quick Tempo is a better chance personally or at least better value. 3rd last start behind a promising one in Maotoi and on the backup here. Shades of Rose obviously deserves respect with her dominant win last start but jumps in class here. Cloudy my next chance followed by Big Easy.

Betting Strategy: Tempted by Big Easy but will no bet this race.

Betting Strategy Summary:

Caul R1: So Si Bon 0.25 units win.

Caul R2: Americain Angel 0.5 units win.

Caul R3: She's All Class 2 units win.

Caul R4: Lady of Honour 1 unit win
